so in case you hadn’t already heard kelly clarkson has a new song out. it’s called ‘my life would suck without you.’ and it’s amazing. on the surface. i mean the lyrics are shit, but in the same way that ‘hot and cold’ (katy perry) is amazing despite the lyrics so is ‘my life would suck without you’.
the problem with the song is more to do with the history of kelly clarkson. ms. clarkson came out with this song in 2004. only then it was called ‘since u been gone’ and had the opposite message. back then it was all about dumping the bad bad man and getting over it. the message of ‘my life would suck without you’ is pretty self-explanatory and is essentially the same song sped up. it’s even more annoying because kelly clarkson came out with an album in the interim that didn’t perform as well and was largely seen as her effort at focussing on her own writing rather that just being a pop singer. let me be very clear that i have nothing wrong with either pop singers or singer-songwriters, it just feels a little disingenuous to jump back into the pop spotlight after a bit of a misguided attempt at becoming more a ‘serious’ artist.
this whole project just feels a little like a re-heated steak: not quite the same. even the music videos are nearly identical in approach accept that in 2004 (click for video) kelly has fans and in 2008 (click for video) she doesn’t. in both we jump between shots of ‘performance kelly’ and ‘annoyingly literal kelly’ who in 2004 is alone and in 2008 is having a nauseating argument with her ‘boyfriend.’ although i’m not going to lie, the bit at the end of the ‘my life would suck without you’ video where she’s in the jeep is pretty good. definitely the best part of the video.
UGH. you see that’s why this whole thing is annoying. i do actually think the song is pretty killer but i feel as though they’re just hoping we’ll all forget about her entire past career with one song. is the song powerful enough to do that? apparently it has broken records for jumping to number one already in the states… i’m still not convinced.
i mean every bitch loves a comeback, but i like to feel a little loyalty from my gay icons and while i have wholeheartedly screamed ‘since u been gone’ at the top my lungs while jumping up and down like a crazy person on a dancefloor i’m not yet sure if i am completely won over by this new song. let’s be honest, i’m a fickle bitch and if they would have really gone for broke with the music video for this song i very well may have forgiven all and just embraced the new, old kelly. now this whole campaign really hinges on the next single for me. the single and especially album cover are already unmitigated disasters so i really feel like i need another single to decide. after all if i’d been asked to decide about kelly’s ‘breakaway’ album based solely on the first single of the same name i would have decided firmly against it from the get go. in fact, it wasn’t until last year that i even realized that song was by her. IT IS AWEFUL.
ok, i’ve listened to ‘my life would suck without you’ eight times while i’ve been writing this and i’m unhappy to report that i already want to dance to it like a fool with my arms in the air like i just don’t care. BLAST YOU KELLY CLARKSON!
as a final aside i’ve decided that there are two types of women in the world, ‘since u been gone girls’ and ‘my life would suck without you girls.’ ‘since u been gone girls’ love themselves and are capable of functioning with or without a man. ‘my life would suck without you girls’ are incapable of functioning without a man. i prefer the former, obviously.
*disingenuing is now a word. that’s how it works when you have a degree in linguistics. you just write things and they become words.
