So talking about Glee’s Whitney “tribute” the other day got me thinking about Whitney Houston’s death and specifically it’s net effect on my life. What I’m about to say has had some friends label me heartless but it remains the truth, and that is that the net effect of Whitney’s death on my life has been positive.

Let me explain.

First of all I’m not really one to be wrapped up in celebrity deaths. No matter how much I like someone or how much influence their creative output has had on the important moments in my life, they’re still not directly involved in it and for me that’s a pretty big distinction. Secondly, Whitney’s music wasn’t exactly on an upward swing; I think we can all agree that her best creative years were well and truly behind her.

At this juncture I would like to point out that I’m a pretty big Whitney fan. Her music is amazing. End of. No discussion. From the LOVE YOURSELF forbearer that is Greatest Love of All to the firework histrionics of I Have Nothing and the genuine tears o’clock brilliance of My Love Is Your Love Whitney’s back catalogue is littered with the kind of genius we rarely get from a pop star. The reason Whitney’s death has had a net positive effect on my life is not because she is not amazing, it’s because her career was superlatively amazing.

Since Whitney Houston has died I have heard more Whitney than I have since The Bodyguard soundtrack was playing almost permanently on my tape player. I’m shopping in the market? WHITNEY! I’m perusing the wares at a thrift store? WHITNEY! Ryan and I are dancing at a local club for men of a certain persuasion? WHITNEY MEGAMIX! WHITNEY! WHITNEY! WHITNEY! Do I wish it didn’t have to take her death for the world to wake up and re-examine how amazing she was? Certainly. Do I feel empathy for her friends and family? Absolutely. I am just not one for becoming overly maudlin at something that has no real effect on my life. And I love myself enough to know that’s fine. Thanks Whitney.

I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

Oh, and this doesn’t make sense. Ridiculous.
