Patrick Wolf is one of those musicians that seems to have been sort of bubbling under forever creating listenable, if not always totally commercial, pop music. His biggest hit, released during his first stint at a major label a few years ago, was undoubtedly The Magic Position, a raucous and resplendent four minutes from an album that proved a critical smash but a commercial disappointment.

Five years on – having released a couple of albums independently in the interim – M. Wolf is back with a major label and, from my vantage point, a pretty good chance of cracking the mainstream pop market. In those intervening years pop music has made a major comeback, especially pop music from off-kilter arty types like Patrick Wolf. His sound is more Florence than Gaga but these days you can actually imagine his music fitting into the popular music landscape which wasn’t always the case in years past.

Also, his comeback single The City (which itself was preceded by the previously mentioned and completely amazing “buzz” single Time of My Life) is properly amazing as evidenced below.

A triumph, right?

It seems to me than Patrick Wolf has mastered what I like to call the Bright Eyes (TM) moment in music. As in turn around bright eyes. It’s that part of a song that builds into a rushing crescendo and in the music video in your mind it’s the point where you turn around on the spot in bright sunshine (probably with lens flares) as the camera spins around you so that just before you’re about to make eye contact it cuts to another camera and you continue spinning all the while beaming with contentedness. In the above song, the Bright Eyes (TM) moment starts at [3:20].

The song in which I first identified the Bright Eyes (TM) moment was Heather Small’s Proud where it starts at [2:50] although the video hugely disappoints featuring absolutely no spinning. (Truth be told the whole video’s pretty shit)
