My new favourite word of 2009 is not unfriend, although that is a killer word. Rather, my new favourite word is bacronym.

From Wikipedia:

A backronym or bacronym is a phrase constructed after the fact to make an existing word or words into an acronym. Bacronyms may be invented with serious or humorous intent, or may be a type of false or folk etymology.
The word is understood as a portmanteau combining back and acronym.

I’ve decided that as I prefer the spelling “bacronym” that will be the British English spelling and “backronym” will be the American English spelling.

Somewhat embarrassingly I think I found the word bacronym while Wikipedia-ing Doctor Who, and specifically, the TARDIS which is apparently a bacronym of “Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.”

Doctor Who Equals Excellent Buddy! (DWEEB)

Love it.
