just a quick note for those of you who are interested, the ladywind website is currently being updated for the summer!
it’s going to be fabulous.
so it’s been a bit of a busy week between school and work. i had a ridiculous ms access project due on wednesday and spent much of the day in a basement computer lab furiously trying to imagine that ms access wasn’t the lamest possible way to be spending a summer afternoon.
but all is well! sex and the city is tomorrow! am so excited. i was contacted by a woman at 24hr looking for an interview with a ‘big fan’ about the movie. she also wanted to take my picture in front of the poster. i obviously said no, for a few reasons. the obvious one being that i don’t want to be ‘crazy gay fan’ in the newspaper. i mean i sort of am a crazy gay fan of sex and the city but maybe i’m a little closeted about it – i also didn’t want to be ‘token fag.’ furthermore, when zoie was profiled in 24hr they made her out to be a crazy barren spinster! she is still talking about litigation if it has lasting effects on her love-life. and finally i had yet to get my haircut and therefore was completely undisposed for any photo opportunities!
in other news, popjustice has been on fire this week. seriously, if you don’t read them yet, you really should. my favourite posts were the alphabeat quiz, radiohead: greatest hits, the ideal gavin rossdale album tracklist and gavin rossdale? radiohead?? what’s going on?! seriously, popjustice is sheer genius!
so it’s still raining today and i’m still loving it. i was walking under my umbrella today and i suddenly remembered something that i’d kind of forgotten from my childhood. when i was little and it rained (and was warm, obviously) i used to like to set up a deck chair in the back yard and read with an umbrella over myself. my parents must have thought i was so weird but i loved it. weird the things you remember.
fallon was kind enought to take the latter half of my shift thisafternoon so spent the rest of the day studying and now i’m feeling pretty good about the mid-term i’m about to take. it’s still the most boring class in existence though.
back to the rain, i’m very much enjoying the rainy day playlist that i had previously mentioned in another post. it is as follows:
so you say – siobhan donaghy
be mine – robyn
early winter – gwen stefani
back to black – amy winehouse
hoppipolla – sigur ros
life on mars – david bowie
just like a pill – pink
one touch – doe deere
the heart of the matter – india arie
true believer – dragonette
i want love – elton john
i’m scared – duffy
nothing but my baby – alphabeat
in the end – justin bond and the hungry march band
no one – alicia keys
bridge over troubled water – annie lennox
funnyman – kt tunstall
foundations – kate nash
looking over it, it’s powergay, and i love it. a perfect mix of sadness and optimism befitting the mood of rain.
so i love the real world, and this season is no different. except for dave. i have a total crush on dave. the rest of them are very annoying and he kind of is too. but i don’t care because he’s adorable. and just to be clear this picture doesn’t capture it. you have to watch the show.
fallon, i know you must love him too.
in other news, i have been posting like crazy today. and i’m still loving the rain. a pretty great day all round.
so jo and trevor are going to try and get tickets to the madonna tour in vancouver and ryan and bobby want to go as well. i do want to go but i’m just not sure i want to spend the money. i keep changing my mind every few minutes about what i want to do but i have to decide before saturday when the tickets go on sale. i’m so torn. i’m such a flip flopper because i’d also like to get to england sometime this year or next, and i’m also saving for the big move to vancouver next year.
grrr. why can’t i just be rich? need to become a trophy spouse asap so that i can get some great madonna tickets and then just laze around all day drinking by a pool and ordering small people around. very much like madonna.
so now i’m in my computer lab which thankfully is air conditioned. basement air conditioned rooms always seem quite strange to me because you can’t really tell what season it is. i haven’t been in this room since mid-winter so it seems weird now that it could be nice upstairs, or rainy, or whatever. it would be very strange if you had to live like this.
anyway my reason for posting is how shockingly boring my lab is. while it is quite educational in so far as i don’t know microsoft access very well, the level at which these classes are taught always strikes me as computers for someone who has never used one before. because they point out the most inane things. like spending time showing people how to cut and paste. seriously, if you can’t cut and paste yet you probably shouldn’t be living in the modern world. to me, cutting and pasting is a pretty everyday activity. i understand that it might not have been 25 years ago but we should all be familiar with those functions by now.
right now we’re talking about referential integrity. next week i should bring the flask.
we’re going to finish forms today and ‘take a big chunk out of queries.’ said without a hint of irony. sigh.
seriously, this man cannot stop saying query.
so it’s raining today and i kind of love it. i love walking along neath my umbrella feeling the cool breeze and the light spray of the falling water. it’s fantastic and one of the reason’s i’m quite excited to move to vancouver as i don’t think it rains enough in alberta. the only problem is coming inside and feeling all sticky with wettish clothes and having to lug around a now quite soaked umbrella… but suppose everything in life is a trade-off in some respect.
i made a rain playlist thismorning on my ipod to enjoy while walking with my umbrella but i’ve been listening to ‘so you say’ by siobhan donaghy pretty much on repeat since i left the house. not only is it a perfect song in it’s own right, it’s also the perfect rainy day song. fantastic.
ugh, i’m all sweaty at the moment as my body adjusts to it being quite warm in the business buidling. kind of gross. i hope i don’t smell. i have a 2 hour computer lab downstairs and i fear it is only going to get hotter and sweatier. also i was planning on going directly to work and changing there but if i get any grosser it’s not going to be a fun evening. maybe i should run home and shower? but surely running will only make me feel grosser and if i have to run back to work due to shower tardiness then it will sort of counteract the shower. decisions decisions.
so i’ve been a bit bored, musically speaking, recently and as such i’ve been looking to incorporate some new music into my already impressive repetoire. on the recommendation of the incomparable popjustice i downloaded ‘medevac’ by siobhan donaghy. at first i wasn’t too impressed but even though i only listened to the song once it lodged itself in my head and i found myself craving it later in the day. on the second and third listens i new i loved it and i have subsequently been enjoying more siobhan.
an original member of the sugababes, siobhan left the girl group during promotion for their first album after what she described as bullying from keisha. neither of her two albums have gone anywhere but both have been well-reviewed and received. while i haven’t delved into the first album, the second, ‘ghosts,’ is amazing. it’s the kind of music, i have to admit, that i didn’t think i would like. a bit hipster-y and almost avant-garde at times, but still pop in general. like imogen heap if she was actually any bloody good. well i’m loving it all. perhaps my music tastes are undergoing an if not seismic then at least significant shift. maybe not. either way siobhan = fantastic. i’m going to go ahead and guess that ryan, jo-ann, and skyla will like siobhan. videos below for two of the singles from ‘ghosts. fantastic.
‘don’t give it up.’ it’s fantastic.
‘so you say.’ completely fantastic to the point of being beyond fantastic and needing a new word to describe it’s fantasticness.
so desperate housewives was on tonight and it was pretty great. except the very end which i’m still not sure about. are they going to continue next season where they left off??? i’m a little confused either way as if they do begin five years later that is surely a bit weird. that being said, if they don’t we already know quite a lot about where the storylines are heading (poor lynette). weird idea. like series finale kind of idea. like when six feet under did it it was amazing idea. i’m still not sure. but everything up to that point was fantastic.
but seriously, what’s up with gay weddings. last week on brothers and sisters and this week on desperate housewives: all of a sudden abc’s gone gay! between those two, ugly betty, cashmere mafia, dancing with the stars, and grey’s anatomy recently its like the gays are on every corner. [a quick note, i don’t really like ugly betty or dancing with the stars but the gay factor of both shows can’t be ignored]
back to desperate housewives, it’s long been a show for the gays. since the beginning we had the delightful andrew van de kamp who has unfortunately been demoted to bit part recently despite one of the gayest names on television.
i for one miss the days of andrew making out in the pool and having men sleep over just to annoy his mother. halcyon days, indeed. as an aside, the brief appearance of gale harold in tonights episode just gayed the whole thing up even more.
brothers and sisters has also had great gay storylines from the beginning with kevin as one of the more enjoyable walkers (especially in comparison to the insufferable tommy). the only complaint i have about his wedding to scotty was the briskness with which the storyline moved: engaged one week and married the next. perhaps it was the writers strike, or just a good event for the season finale but they could have made the engagement a little longer.
aside from kevin and scotty brothers and sisters is also blessed with justin who is the hottest walker. between kevin, justin, rachel griffiths and sally field it is one of the gayest shows on tv.
just as a final aside, and for the leslies (holla salloum!), i am attatching a picture of the fantastic kate walsh that i forgot to include in my post a few days ago about tv. kate walsh is a girl’s girl. the ‘mos and leslies can both enjoy her fantasticness for different reasons. i adore her. it’s a shame private practice is so shit. maybe it will finally be good this season. (a girl can dream, etc etc)
according to various published reports, desperate housewives will pick up next season five years in the future! this is either the most amazing thing that has ever happened to television or a complete disaster but i’m leaning towards the former right now. click here to read all about the change.
so we went for a picnic yesterday at the ledge which was fantastic. i brought a parasol. for the uninitiated a parasol is an umbrella for use in the sun. aka a beach umbrella. it is from the french who use ‘parapluit’ for a rain umbrella and ‘parasol’ for a sun umbrella: originally from latin meaning ‘shield from rain’ and ‘shield from the sun,’ respectively. i love my parasol.
anyway, the picnic was fantastic! fallon, dru, nelle and i had a fabulous lunch that included cheese, mundare sausage, olives and local tomatoes, small cucumbers, spinach dip, and pita form the farmers market. then we lazed in the sun and paddled in the pools for 4 hours. lovely. we also enjoyed ice cream. although mine looked a bit too much like a chocolate-banana penis.
the big fountain closest to the legislature building was not operational yet which was a shame, especially because we were kicked off the big fountain behind it by a very polite security man. it was annoying only because he told us we couldn’t be in it as the water pressure is too much for small children. besides the obvious problem – children ruining everything – it was a little annoying that we were moved from a fountain but a group of girls behind us were not discouraged from smoking pot. also there were kids in that fountain later and the security guard was nowhere to be found. hmmm.
people watching was fantastic all day though. there was a very PDA-oriented couple that looked like something out of a porn film who insisted on smoking and making out (in equal excessive amounts) right in the paddling pools where small children were whizzing by them. then there was the girl in a bright silver bikini-top and booty shorts who insisted on rocking her body out silently to her ipod while her younger brother (or son, who knows these days?) played catch with an older man on the cement next to her private rave. to make the picture even more wholesome they were playing catch with a discarded pop bottle. it was all class. (other people have arts and crafts: we judge, etc etc)
ryan and bobby came by after a while and (thankfully) brought us some bottled water as we had failed to properly calculate the level of dehydration a few hours in the sun would cause. all in all it was the perfect afternoon.
